Albers House is a renovation-addition project in Scarborough, Ontario, where a modest bungalow is transformed with a new second floor and a reimagined interior. The design, inspired by Josef Albers' Homage to the Square, features a series of staggered square volumes radiating from a central shaft containing a triple-height void and a large square skylight. This creates a dynamic and poetic experience of light and space, with the void serving as a vertical axis that connects the interior to the open sky. The house’s exterior, with its abstract geometry and gradation of greys, contrasts with the surrounding neighborhood, offering a serene yet bold presence. The project merges functional design with artistic expression, challenging traditional notions of home while providing an uplifting reminder of what a house can be.
